Recreational fishery discard practices influence use of tidal estuary by a large marine mesopredator

چکیده

Context It is common for recreational anglers to discard waste produced from filleting catches back into the water, which results in a highly spatio-temporally predictable food subsidy wildlife scavenge. However, behavioural responses of these scavengers has received little attention. Aims We aimed assess visitation mesopredatory scavenger relation temporal patterns discarding at boat ramp south-eastern Australia. Methods Using passive acoustic telemetry, movements 13 adult female smooth stingrays (Bathytoshia brevicaudata) were tracked, and their detections duration time spent different sections within study area compared. Key Use was strongly focused around ramp, peaked during periods increased provisioning activity (i.e. afternoons weekends). Environmental variables had limited influence on visitation, suggesting that use not likely be linked natural behaviours. Conclusions The observed indicated waste-discard practices by anglers. Implications This implications management fishing.

Zooplankton sample variability in a tidal estuary :

A series of 347 vertical zooplankton hauls was made at a 175-h anchor station in the upper St. Lawrence estuary, Quebec, and current meter profiles were recorded. The 95% confidence interval of a single observation in most of the copepod time series was about 25400% of the mean. Temporal variability consisted for the most part of semidiurnal fluctuations superimposed on a long term trend. Other...

Predation Risk Influences the Diving Behavior of a Marine Mesopredator

Exploring factors that influence diving behavior is critical to understanding energy budgets, habitat use, and exploitation rates of prey. Optimal diving behavior studies have focused primarily on trade-offs between oxygen recovery at the surface and energy intake at depth. General predictions from these models are often supported by empirical data, but a mismatch exists between theory and data...

Tidal forcing of enterococci at marine recreational beaches at fortnightly and semidiurnal frequencies.

Marine beach water quality is typically monitored in early morning once a week without respect to tidal condition. To assess the effect of tide on this public health warning system, we analyzed enterococci (ENT) data from 60 southern California marine beaches with differing geomorphology, orientation, and proximity to runoff sources. ENT concentrations during spring tides were significantly hig...
